Looking to the temporary public holiday, Mayor Kwon Oh-Bong of Yeosu City inspected major tourist spots in the city on Aug. 17, when Covid-19 was raging again across the country. Touring the city’s key tourist attractions such as Odongdo, Expo Station, Manseong-ri Beach Resort, Mayor Kwon offered his pep talk to those city officials, who skipped their holiday break and were working hard on their emergency duties such as checking visitors for fever or inspecting tourist sites in the face of the summer heat. The mayor asked the city workers to do their best to maintain the quarantine system, traffic condition, and garbage pickup in the tourist spots . According to Yeosu City, over the National Liberation holidays which included one temporary day off, 210,000 tourists visited the city. Widely perceived as an excellent tourist destination amidst the Covid-19 pandemic because the city is free from infections, Yeosu has been visited by 910,000 people in August that launches the summer vacation. In the wake of the recent outbreaks in Seoul metropolitan region, mostly with collective infections at religious facilities and explosive infections mainly at adult entertainment facilities, the South Korean government has described the current situation as ’the early stage of a pandemic’. Mayor Kwon in turn expressed his concern, saying, “Now, the risk of coronavirus infection is not limited to ’high-risk facilities’, but there is much increased risk that we are exposed in all venues of our daily life such as restaurants, cafes, bars, and marketplaces.“ He went on to say, “To keep our Yeosu’s reputation and pride as a city from Covid-19 infections, the cooperation from our city people is desperately needed,“ and added, “We seriously ask to you to strictly observe the hygiene rules such as wearing masks, social distancing, and washing hands and refrain from meetings or events that involve multitudes.“ He continued to say, “We also ask the religious communities to check visitors for fever, practice social distancing, and create visitor lists as they have done excellently so far.“ Meanwhile, Yeosu City keeps the city free from Covid-19 by preemptively operating drive-through screening stations and checking people for fever at public transit facilities such as railway stations and bus terminals. At the same time, the city strictly keeps tabs on self-isolating people, contact, and visitors from overseas. Yeosu regularly check on its quarantine status by enforcing the electronic visitor list not only for the eight facilities requiring such logging including bars and karaokes, but also the contact-involving tourist programs such as city tour.
