The 13th Yeosu Hyangilam Sunrise Festival is held at Hyangilam Temple, one of the most beautiful sunrise sites in Korea, to wish good luck in the new year from December 31, 2007 to January 1, 2008.
The event opens with the appreciation of sunrise in Mt. Geumoat 5 p.m. on December 31, 2007. It offers various tourists-participating programs including Year-End Gilnori, Theme Video, Opening Ceremony (Lighting a fire of desire), Creative Drama and Wishing Candle Light Ceremony.
On January 1, 2008, diversified events including Watch-Night Bell Tolling in which Yeosu Mayor, Oh Hyeon-seop and Council Chair,Park Jeong-chae take part, Camp Fire, Ganggang Suweolrae, Daedong Court, Visitors' Court and Talent Show are held.
Various events including Cheongo Binari Exorcism, Sun Rise Ceremony and Visitors' Court are held from 6:30 a.m., and a sunrise event is concluded with releasing wishing balloons.
During the event period, Hyangilam is open to visitors for free, and a temporary parking lot was offered to visitors. 8 parking lots are allowed to accommodate a total of 232 cars including 500 units in National Park Parking Lot, 60 units from the entry of the National Park to Soyul Village, 100 units in Daeyul Village, 200 units in Seongdu Gogae Parking Lot, 30 units in Baekpo Village, 30 units in a road from Baekpo to Bangjukpo, 400 units in Bangjukpo Beach and 1,000 units in Jukpo 3-Way Crossing.
Shuttle buses operate from the National Park Parking Lot to Jukpo 3-Way Crossing and Seongdu Parking Lot for the traffic convenience.
In addition, visitors are allowed to view the sunrise from a ship begining January 1, 2009. Irregular passenger ships and pleasure boats operate from Dolsan Bridge and Odongdo Marina to Hyangilam.
Yeosu City advised visitors to use other sunrise areas in Odongdo, Manseongri Beach and Mt. Gubong to reduce expected traffic congestion on the day of the event. Refer to Yeosu City Hall homepage for details on the event or staff in charge of festivals in the Tourism Department of the city (82-061-690-2042).
In addition to Hyangilam, there are other famous sunrise attractions in Yeosu including Odongdo, Jasan Park, Manseongri Beach, Mt. Gubong, Hwayang-myeon and Mipyeong-dong in Mt. Bonghwa, Sorido, Baekdo, Mt. Gorak, Mt. Museon, Yongweolsa Temple in Mt. Dolsan, Gyedong and Musulmok.
