The Korean Committee for UNICEF appoints Yeosu as an ‘exchange city’ on 2/1
The Korean Committee for UNICEF signed a treaty with Yeosu-si for its participation in UNICEF’s child development program ‘A better world for all children’ on 2/1.
UNICEF spokesman actor Sung-gi Ahn participated in the treaty ceremony, and the Korean Committee for UNICEF presented Yeosu-si with an appreciation plaque for its support over the years.
The Korean Committee for UNICEF’s secretary general Dong-eun Park stated “Yeosu-si has been leading efforts to solve the global poverty problem with programs like ‘Yeosu-si Global Charity Association’. That is why the Korean Committee for UNICEF appreciates the signing of this treaty with Yeosu-si”.
She added “The Korean Committee for UNICEF has been active for 16~17 years since the conversion to a donor country in 1994. After donating 3.5 million dollars to needy countries in 1995, in 2009 24 million dollars were spent on saving children overseas.”
Actor Sung-gi Ahn said “I hadn’t visited Yeosu in 10 years. As someone who received substantial help after the war, after working as a spokesman I feel even more pride in what we’ve accomplished”.
He continued “I’m sure Yeosu-si realized today’s UNICEF cooperation treaty was for the benefit of Yeosu-si. I implore you to take an active, sustainable interest in our work”.
Yeosu-si donated $100,000 to Nigeria for polio vaccines in 2007, and 1.3 million dollars to UNICEF to commemorate UN Secretary General Ki-moon Ban’s visit to Yeosu-si. In addition, the Yeosu-si Global Charity Association has provided free healthcare services to underdeveloped countries such as Africa since 2007, demonstrating Yeosu-si’s love for humanity.
Under the treaty, Yeosu-si will provide aid to UNICEF’s child development programs such as collecting donations from federal and civilian employees for a period of 3 years. UNICEF will help Yeosu-si by endorsing its charity programs in Korea and abroad, and solidify Yeosu-si’s image as an international city.
UNICEF was established by the UN on 12/11/1946 to feed hungry children all over the world. With a motto of ‘Providing aid without discrimination’, it continues to support underprivileged children all over the world.
