Lighthouses to be constructed on Odong Island, Yeosu, commemorating the 2012 Yeosu World Expo, are expected to become a popular tourist site.
The organizing committee of 2012 Yeosu World Expo (Chairman Gang Dong-seok) confirmed and announced on April 25 the construction of new lighthouses for the eastern and northern breakwaters. They are expected to play the role of a marine gate to Sinhang, Yeosu.
The Expo lighthouses are to be designed spiral-shaped to symbolize the merger of "life" and "coexistence" in order to express the theme of the Expo, which is "Living Sea, Breathing Seashore." Also, the design will fulfill the functional, safety and economic conditions of a lighthouse in order to safely lead sailing boats.
Most noteworthy, the lighthouses' design is evaluated as being outstanding compared to famous non-Korean lighthouses and likely to become a popular tourist site as various sceneries stretch out from different points of the two identical lighthouses.
Aside from the Expo lighthouses, the organizing committee is working on new designs for the western breakwater and marine facilities around Sinhang, Yeosu, in order to transform the overall image of the exposition site and Sinhang.
The committee plans to take the Expo as an opportunity to transform Sinhang from being a freight-based port to an international tourist leisure port for cruises and passenger boats entering and leaving the place. In particular, many tourists are expected to visit the Expo not only by land but also by sea.
The construction of the Expo lighthouses is expected to start in August and be completed by the year end.
