- “Yeosu Global SFX Congress” to take place from August 19 to 21
- An international event … special effects experts gather in one spot
The world’s first SFX (special effects) event will take place under the theme of “Beyond the Reality” at Yeosu Jinnam Sports Park and Jinnam Culture and Arts Center from August 19 to 21. Visitors will be able to see SFX characters from Korean and foreign movies and TV dramas all in one place.
Yeosu Global SFX Congress was founded to promote the visual industry and to create synergy with the Expo Yeosu. Famous names in the Korean and foreign film production industries and SFX specialists will gather together at the event.
The function is jointly hosted by Jeollanam-do and Yeosu and organized by Jeonnam Culture Industry Promotion Agency.
This event was designed as a special cultural content of Yeosu so that it may create synergy with the Expo 2012 Yeosu. It went through a year of preparation, beginning with the appointment of an advisory council in November last year (chairperson Cheol-woo Lee, Chonnam National University) to conclusion of MOU with leading domestic and foreign organizations.
Yeosu Global SFX Congress 2010 includes conferences, an award ceremony & a forum and an exhibition & activities program. There will also be performances by the Goodwill Ambassador and other additional events.
For the awards program, domestic and foreign SFX works were accepted until the end of June. Based on these submissions, 18 digital productions and 13 analog productions (31 in total) will be screened at the event.
There will be presentations by specialists at the conferences, which are divided into a keynote session (1 person: Korea) and general sessions (12 persons: Korea 6, overseas 6). The latter is further organized into general tracks (3D modeling & 2D rendering; 3D filming; latest production technology etc) and special tracks (animatronics, special makeup etc).
Visitors can participate in the exhibition & activities program, which will incorporate motion capture, blue screen, miniatures and behind-the-scene films of CG movies to give the visitors an opportunity to become a movie character.
At the opening ceremony, there will be performances by ZE:A and a “gukak & b-boy show.”
By hosting the world’s first SFX event, Jeollanam-do and Yeosu are planning to promote the Expo 2012 domestically and internationally. They also expect the function to strengthen local competitiveness through tourism and leisure industries and create jobs through the development of cultural contents, which are classified as the integrative knowledge and labor industry.
“The field of special effects can easily create high value-added and new growth engines. Yeosu Global SFX Congress 2010 will make an opportunity to focus these industrial demands in Yeosu and Jeonnam,” Gi-hoon Kim said, the chairperson of Jeonnam Culture Industry Promotion Agency.
He further explained, “This event will have a large economic effect as a result of reinforced local competitiveness, creation of jobs and tourism. After the 2012 Yeosu Expo, it will be able to settle down as a ‘killer content’ of Yeosu.”
“Yeosu Global SFX Congress will contribute to the establishment of a differentiated local brand through coexistence of tradition and the latest technology, market entrance of rare fields and local marketing,” a related source said. “Yeosu will strengthen its administrative support for the event so that it hosts this international function successfully and heightens its brand image as the host of Expo.”
