A long-legged giant wearing a necktie on the way to his office; a giant man in a suit taking a nap lying on the street – these are the artworks of Kim Gyung-min, known for her sculptures that cheerfully capture slice of life in Seoul. Now Kim provides her whimsical sculptures for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.
The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea announced on October 4 that Kim has agreed to lend some of her works for the Expo. In fact, Kim already created a sculpture entitled “Dreaming of the World” on the rooftop of the Organizing Committee’s office. The sculpture depicts a long-legged woman wearing a vivid pink dress looking at the Expo site through a telescope.
Kim’s other artworks will be displayed in the Expo Digital Gallery (EDG), an LED street that will stretch from Yeosu Expo Station and through the International Pavilion. Kim’s sculpture “Family on the Beach” to be installed in the Fusion Plaza of the EDG will allow visitors to experience the harmony from combining IT and art and invoke a sense of warmth with the family scene the sculpture depicts.
“Yeosu Expo will not only offer wonderful arrays of cutting-edge technologies but also be a warm, people-oriented festival,” said Organizing Committee Chairman Kang Dong-suk. “We’ll impress visitors, blending culture and art through cheerful sculptures and colorful Expo site.”
Kim is famous for works that refrain from commercialism and rather delineate slice of life themes with humor and satire. “Dreaming of the World” truly shows Kim’s philosophy as an artist and be an unconventional yet fun attraction to visitors at the Expo site.
▽ “Dreaming of the World,” artist Kim Gyung-min’s another sculpture, is now placed on the rooftop of the Organizing Committee’s office.
