The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea (in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) appointed Jacques Perrin, actor in Cinema Paradiso and producer of such documentary films as Microcosmos and Oceans, as an honorary ambassador for Yeosu Expo on February 22, 2012 at the Korean Embassy in France.
Jacques Perrin is a well-known French actor and documentary filmmaker. He has starred in about 100 movies, and is perhaps best known for his role as the adult "Salvatore" in the international hit movie, Cinema Paradiso.
Mr. Perrin has led efforts to publicize the importance of the ocean and environment through his films. He produced Microcosmos (1996), a documentary film which records the life of insects in incredibly minute detail, for which he was named best producer at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2001, he directed Winged Migration (Le Peuple Migrateur), a documentary film showcasing the immense journeys routinely made by birds during their migrations. Oceans, his nature documentary released in 2010, was named documentary of the year at the 36th Annual Cesar Awards in Paris.
During his appointment ceremony, Mr. Perrin said, "Oceans, which take up more than two thirds of the earth, are spaces of new challenge and hope for human beings," adding, "I will do my best to promote Expo 2012 Yeosu and its ocean theme throughout Europe."
Lee Chung-Seon, Deputy Director General for General Marketing of the Organizing Committee said, "Mr. Perrin’s deep understanding of and affection for the ocean is demonstrated by his documentary film Oceans, produced over the course of seven years." Lee added, "He is such an influential figure in the European cultural sector, so we expect his active role in promoting Yeosu Expo to the entire world as our honorary ambassador."
