President Lee Myung-bak says the 2012 Yeosu Expo will serve to usher in a new era for the nation's southern coast, following the event's opening in the port city of Yeosu on Saturday.
In his biweekly radio address Monday, the president said it's highly significant that the biggest global festival of the economy, culture and science has opened in a small, provincial city with a population of 300-thousand.
Lee said the Yeosu Expo is the first-ever green expo themed on the ocean and the environment. He said a Yeosu declaration will also be adopted to encourage a joint global response to pollution of the seas.
He said above all the expo is a great opportunity to let the world in on the beauty of Korea's southern coast and spur development in Yeosu and in South Korea overall.
