Expo’s Hidden Fun: Hands-on Programs
Coastal and Deep-sea Fisheries Experience Zones, Energy Park Gain Popularity for Educational Experience
Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea provides not just a host of things to watch but also hands-on experience that engage visitors. The Fisheries Experience Zone (Coastal/Deep-sea) and the Energy Park, located outside the Expo site, are must-visit places. Visitors are allowed to re-enter the Expo site once.
The Fisheries Experience Zone (Coastal) presents the history of the fishery industry in Korea whose three sides are surrounded by the seas. It displays coastal vessels and fish farm miniatures. The vessels are equipped with various fishing gears and equipments that are often used in the southern coast, so visitors will have a chance to put their hands on the devices.
A fish farm miniature has floating fish farm and shellfish farming facilities where visitors can pull farming equipments and see shellfish that comes with them such as oysters, mussels and abalone. Miniatures of a bamboo weir, a fish trap and a pound net will showcase ancestral wisdom in fishing, which will impress visitors.
The highlight of the Fisheries Experience Zone (Coastal) is a floating artificial marine forest which is half the size of a soccer field. The forests, consisted of seaweeds, feature the coexistence of subtropical aquarium fish, yellowtail and other large fish, delivering a unique experience to visitors who can hardly access the seas. The forests are open from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and approximately 30 minutes are required to look around the site.
The Fisheries Experience Zone (Deep Sea) invites visitors to a ‘fishing trip’ on a deep-sea fishing vessel far outside at sea. Once they step into the experience zone, visitors will find a space that looks exactly like a steering house of a vessel. It presents 4D simulation that provides vivid images and experience of tuna fishing, where visitors would feel riding out violent waves to catch tuna in southern pacific waters. Visitors who get the answer for a quiz will have a chance to operate navigating devices and equipments inside the steering house.
Once they get off a ship, visitors will spot a freezing frozen-fish-warehouse. The warehouse is a smaller version of an actual frozen-fish-warehouse, displaying piles of one-meter-long tuna and the manufacturing process of canned tunas. It is open until 8 p.m. and takes around 15 minutes to look around.
The Energy Park is a well-organized park that offers experience on renewable energy and a space for relaxation to visitors. The Energy Park consists of an inside exhibition space and an outdoor experience zone. The inside facility displays Online Electric Buses, hydrogen-fueled electric cars, and solar power generation, offering visitors an opportunity to understand how they work.
Visitors of all ages can come together to enjoy and learn about energy at the outdoor experience zone. Visitors can watch and enjoy “energy orchestra”, “bicycle water canon”, a dance floor and an energy maze game. Energy Orchestra consists of mirrors that reflect sunlight. Once the sunlight is projected onto keyboards, it produces sounds. The bicycle water canon shoots off a canon when visitors step on the pedals. The facility is available until 8 p.m., and visitors are advised to set aside one hour to enjoy the venue to the fullest.
