Yeosu Expo Offers a Feast of Culture … along with
International Symposium Themed on the Oceans
The “King of R&B” John Legend, Korean top singer Shin Hae-chul and a famous Korean dance group DJ.DOC will perform at Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. The mega performances, along with unique traditional performances by participating nations such as Switzerland, Oman, Sweden, Ecuador and Argentina, are all scheduled for this week at the Yeosu Expo.
A world-famous R&B star John Legend, who is considered to be on a par with Stevie Wonder, is set to perform on May 26 at 7:30 p.m. on the Floating Stage. Performances by DJ.DOC and Shin Hae-chul are scheduled for 22~23nd and 24~25th each in the evening at the Tent Theatre.
Participating nation’s performances that are available only at the Yeosu Expo are also ready to captivate visitors. Most of them are performed for the first time in Korea.
In celebrating Switzerland Day, the country prepared fusion performances. Swiss traditional music will be played to the rhythms of tango, twist, and cha-cha along with fantastic dances to symbolize cultural diversity of Switzerland.
Oman traditional performances, full of the Middle-East flavors, will take place on 22nd. The Al-majd, a traditional cultural performance group founded in 1986, is going to stage a dynamic song and dance performance, featuring Oman’s festivals, weddings and fishing culture.
The Sweden Pavilion wages “Pippi Longstocking” on 23rd. Pippi Longstocking is a children's book by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, which was adapted into multiple films and television series. Pippi, whose signature feature is red hair in two braids, is the most popular and widely known “bratty” character.
The performance on Sweden Day, on the 23rd, will feature a nine-year old Pippi making fool of Mrs. Prysselius and an officer King. Swedish cinnamon rolls and smoothie will be handed out to children who come to enjoy the show.
A comedy show that combines modern slapstick comedy with music, will be staged at 6 p.m. in front of the Sweden Pavilion. The Floating Stage will host a DJ show that will feature Swedish performance team, “Sirqus Alfon.” The Sirqus Alfon is a street performing team which was one of the most popular performances at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
A number of meaningful events that touch the Expo’s theme, the oceans, will take place as well. A conference on maritime technology and science 'OCEANS’12 MTS/IEEE Yeosu' is scheduled to be held at the Ocean Resort for three days starting from Monday, and the general meeting of Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology(JCOMM) will be held at the Expo Hall for nine days.
Other fascinating events and performances are slated to take place at 80 special exhibition facilities and the International Pavilion where 104 nations are taking part. A host of children shows, marine shows, multi-media shows, special performances, participating nations’ performances, ship exhibitions are also ready to welcome visitors. All the exhibitions and performances are available with a single admission ticket (33,000 won for adults). Few pavilions including Aquarium need a reservation in advance, so visitors are recommended to check relevant information on the Expo official website (www.expo2012.kr) and make a reservation prior to their visits.
