Ballet “Shim Chung”
to be Presented on a Marine Stage
Korea’s first marine ballet performance is set to be presented
for three days from May 28
The Big-O transforms into the oceans on May 28.
The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea announced that the signature performance “Shim Chung” of the Universal Ballet will be staged on the Floating Stage at the Yeosu Expo from May 28 to 30. It is the first-time ever to put on a performance on a floating stage in the oceans in the history of Korean ballet.
The ballet Shim Chung is a global creative work that embodies Korean virtue “filial piety”, which means respecting and taking care of one’s parents, in the form of ballet which is widespread in the West. Since its premiere in 1986, the Shim Chung has been staged for more than 200 times in 10 different countries, earning a global reputation. With the Shim Chung on its world tour, the word “Ballet Korean Wave” was newly coined.
The ballet Shim Chung is said to be a remarkable performance that incorporates Korean traditional virtue with Western ballet. All ballet dancers wear Korean traditional costumes specially modified for ballet, but all of their movements are based on the basics of classical ballet. From the premier to modifying work, artists from diverse backgrounds worked together to refine the Shim Chung as a global masterpiece that holds the uniqueness of Korea.
Moon Hoon-sook, the General Director of Universal Ballet, said that “a floating stage in the oceans offers a very unfavorable condition for ballet performance as its floor is often slippery due to humidity. But the Yeosu Expo is a very significant event that provides us an opportunity to promote Korea to the rest of the world, and as our company is pioneering a new frontier of “Ballet Korean Wave“ with the Shim Chung on its world tour, I find the performance on a floating stage this time very meaningful.”
The Universal Ballet was invited to perform in Paris in September, which will be a golden opportunity to show the world what the Universal Ballet and Shim Chung have got.
