Theme Pavilion Shines with Empire State Building
Joint Light Show to Celebrate World Oceans Day
In celebrating World Oceans Day, New York City’s Empire State Building and the Theme Park at the Yeosu Expo was lit on the evening of June 8 in white, blue and purple.
The lights of the two buildings were brightly lit in the three colors from the bottom to the top, symbolizing the different layers of the ocean. White represents the shallow sunlit waters and the polar ice cap. Blue represents the slightly deeper waters, and purple represents the deepest reaches of the ocean.
The concept for World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and was designated by the United Nations in December 2008. In celebrating the fourth anniversary of World Oceans Day, the UN and the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea jointly planned lighting themed on the ocean. On June 8, at 9 pm (local time), the Yeosu Expo presented the Big-O show and projected the three colors that represent the ocean along with phrases that celebrate World Oceans Day onto the media facade at the Theme Pavilion. In response, the upper part of the Empire State Building was lit brightly on June 8, at 8 pm EST (June 9 at 10 am local time).
The light show highlighted the Theme Pavilion as one of the world’s major buildings that match with New York City’s Empire State Building. The Theme Pavilion is a form of artificial island floating in the sea, which looks like a barnacle when seen from the sea and a sperm whale when seen from the land. The pavilion presents dugong performances as well as the world’s best practices in the preservation and development of the oceans, establishing itself as one of the most popular pavilions at the Yeosu Expo
