“Ocean Opera” Walks on the Sea of Yeosu
French Theatre Company “Ilotopie” Comes to Yeosu
to Stage First Water Performance in Korea
Ilotopie, one of France's best loved street theatre companies, comes to Korea to perform at Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea Water Performance Festival.
The company, which is famous for their masterpieces “Water Fools” and “People of color”, is set to stage “Ocean Opera”, an aquatic performance created for the Yeosu Expo, for 10 days from June 20 at the Big-O floating stage.
The floating stage at the Big-O, the centerpiece of the Yeosu Expo that is themed on the ocean, will sink into the ocean during the show, creating an illusion that actors and actresses are walking on the water.
The Ocean Opera uses the ocean to tell the story of water as the only free space in modern cities crowded with buildings. It embodies the images of poems, fantasies and dreams, and transports visitors into a mythical watery-wonderland with beautiful city landscape which will be projected on the surface of the water during the show.
The characters in “Ilotopie” walk around the stage with an ingeniously engineered surfing board, ride a bicycle and dream away in bed, all atop the waters. Also make appearances are a woman clad in a gigantic skirt and a magician with a burning hat. Dreamy scenes capture the eyes of the audiences with a massive tree flowing across the waters and fireworks creating clouds of smoke filling the stage.
“Ilotopie” has been showcasing interdisciplinary art performances that encourage participation from spectators in Europe and elsewhere from the 1980s, suggesting a new paradigm for aquatic plays and street performances. As a production troupe that represents the European scene, it also established a large-scale research center and production company of street performances around in the French Rhone river region in 1992. Ilotopie has already mesmerized millions of viewers around the world in festivals and events held in 45 cities including the Thames Festival London and Festival d'Avignon in France.
