Selected third place via Internet voting for the top 100 Korean tourist sites conducted by the Korea Tourism Organization
Geomun Island and Baek Island of Samsan-myeon, Yeosu, were selected as the third top must-go tourist sites for Koreans.
According to Yeosu City, the Korea Tourism Organization conducted voting on 126 sites on its “Must-go 100 Korean tourist sites for Koreans” (www.mustgo100.or.kr) from June 20 to August 19.
The results, as of August 21, showed that Geomun Island of Yeosu placed third after Mungyeongsaejae and Upo Marsh in Changnyeong. It was selected as the most popular tourist site in Jeolla-do.
Geomun Island is composed of East, West, and High Islands that look like a folding screen. The Geomun Island lighthouse, lit for the second time in Korea in 1905 and the first on the southern seashore, is famous for its beautiful surrounding scenery that it is a major tourist site filled with tourists year-round.
In particular, Baek Island, a national scenic spot at no. 7, is drawing much attention as a must-see travel course for its strange rocks, bizarre stones, and mysterious land that are considered a gift of heaven.
“We believe the results should be attributed to our diverse tourism publicity and provision of 50% discounts on passenger ships from July,” a Yeosu City official said. “We will continue to work hard to make the beautiful tourist sites of Yeosu known by a wider public.”
Meanwhile, Yeosu City is pursuing to additionally designate its main tourist sites, such as Odong Island and the Bireong Road on Geumo Island in the top 100 Korean tourist sites.
