Yeosu City will hold for the “2013 Eighth Silk Road Mayors Forum” four days from October 21 to 24. Mayor Chung-seog Kim of Yeosu got to host the event after a fierce competition in Gaziantep, Turkey in November last year between eight cities including Heviz, Hungary; Islamabad, Pakistan; Rizhao, China; Urumqi, China; Gaza, Palestine; Belgorod, Russia; Ankara, Turkey; and Yeosu, Korea.
The theme this year will be “Harmony of Global Civilization and New Silk Road” to learn the history of exchanges between civilizations through the silk road and consolidate a marine silk road starting from Yeosu as a new concept going beyond the traditional concept of the silk road. This is for Yeosu to rise into an international city and enhance its international capacity with cooperation and exchanges among cities worldwide.
At the forum, mayors of about 70 cities of about 30 countries worldwide and 300 distinguished guests from the World Citizen Organization (WCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE), the Swedish ambassador in Japan, officials of UN organizations, professors, and experts of different fields, will participate.
Mayor Kim of Yeosu will announce in session three of the forum, his plan to construct Yeosu into a city that people want to come to at least once, a city people want to live in, the world’s fourth most beautiful port, and an international capital of marine tourism and leisure sports education and culture, by renovating the port and city in a sustainable way as the base for a marine silk road creating a new history using the infrastructure built while preparing for the 2012 Yeosu Expo.
