From the Expo to the Yeosu Night Ocean
The raised awareness of the city from the Expo 2012 and the tourism infrastructure, such as roads, transportation, and lodging, developed then were analyzed as having contributed the most to such an increase in the number of tourists.
Yeosu’s tourism products, differentiated from other cities, such as the Yeosu City Tour, Cruise Tour, Night Tour of Geobukseon, and Marine Rail Bike, spearheaded the vitalization of the local tourism industry.
Popular singers group Busker Busker made the song, “Yeosu Night Ocean,” popular to the point that many tourists poured in last summer to fully enjoy the beautiful ocean of Yeosu at night.
Island hopping tourism has become famous from Geumodo Island, which became famous for its Bireong Road, to the heaven-endowed unexplored regions of Geomundo Island and Baekdo Island, the flower island of Hahwado Island, and the dinosaur island of Sado Island. Hence, the influx of tourists seeking the islands largely grew.
The “Big-O Show,” a top show of the expo, was newly opened and all kinds of rail tourism products, such as tourism farm tours and the S-train, followed, enjoying much popularity.
As a result, Yeosu was selected as the top site to spend 2013 summer vacations in Jeolla-do by the Korea Management Association. Geomundo Island and Baekdo Island, boasting of heaven’s beauty, were selected as “the third top Korean tourist sites among the top 100,” thus widely ushering in the golden age of Yeosu tourism.
Both the private and public sectors worked in unison and played an important role in welcoming over 10 million tourists.
The civil awareness that matured and developed more during the expo made tourists gain a favorable view of Yeosu and provided them the motivation to visit the city again.
The comprehensive tourism watching rooms installed in the city monitored the tourism information booths at the 14 sites and parking order guidance at tourist sites, thus kindly responding to phone calls and immediately processing items that caused discomfort to tourists. By doing this, the city lent an ear to all complaints of its citizens and tourists.
The citizens’ full support also ignited tourism in the city.
The motto of “Can do, just do, let’s do” started among civil servants last 2000 and worked as a force uniting the city’s citizens amounting to about 300,000 people.
The legend of the Yeosu peninsula, located at the end of Korea’s southern sea, after successfully holding the EXPO, was being realized once more as well.
Development of differentiated tourism contents—rise as an international marine tourism site
The city plans to enhance its preparations for the accommodation of tourism based on demand and for the opening of a sustainable tourism era of 10 million tourists annually by upgrading the tourism class of Yeosu.
It is working hard to create zones, including a history and culture tourism zone in the city center, a Dadohae ecosystem exploring tourism zone, a marine leisure and sports resort tourism zone in the Gamak and Jangsu Bays, and an ecosystem experiencing tourism zone in Yeoja Bay.
The municipal government also plans to build an expo tourism culture belt connecting the expo site to the black sand beaches of Manseong-ri of Odongdo Island and develop a waterfront connecting the Lee, Sun-sin Plaza – old port – Ungcheon hydrophile beach – Soho Yacht site to create a tourism route circulating the city.
In addition, the city disclosed its plan to create an international marine port where 150,000-ton cruise ships can anchor in the Yeosu Port and to install marine mooring facilities in Geomundo, Nangdo, and Geumodo Islands to vitalize island tourism.

“Tourist satisfaction with our tourism infrastructure and services is rising overall that we are equipped with sufficient competitiveness,” said Yeosu Mayor Kim, Chung-seok. “We will work hard so that Yeosu becomes an international marine tourism site that represents Northeast Asia, tapping on the opportunity provided by the era of 10 million tourists.”
