Hyangilam in Yeosu is “packed with people” to watch the sunrise on New Year’s Day with 38,000 visitors
Hyangilam in Yeosu is considered one of the top four places for Buddhist pilgrimage. It overflows with tourists to watch the sunrise on New Year’s Day.
According to the Yeosu Municipal Government, about 38,000 visited the “18th Hyangilam Sunrise Festival” held from 6:00 p.m. on December 31 until 10:00 a.m. on January 1.
Compared to the 15,000 visitors last year, the crowd registered more than double.
The number of tourists visiting famous sites, including the Yeosu night sea, and coming to watch the sunrise seems to have jumped because Yeosu became widely known and was highly publicized with a recent record of 10 million visitors in a year .
Mayor Kim, Chung-seog of Yeosu, Chief Monk Won, Moon of Hyangilam, and other dignitaries participated in the 33rd bell tolling ceremony that started at midnight on December 31.
As a large crowd gathered from all parts of the country to watch the sunrise on the night of the bell tolling, they shook the late night stillness of the Hyangilam Temple where Zen priests meditate.
As a red sun rose on the endless horizon of Dado Sea at 7:36 a.m., people exclaimed in awe. The people each uttered their wishes for the New Year and prayed for peace and stability in 2014.
“For this year’s festival, we provided a lot for sightseeing and made it different from the previous years, which gained favorable response among the visitors,” an officer of the municipal government said. “We will work harder to develop local tourist products linked with Hyangilam, a famous site to make New Year wishes,” he continued.
