Multicultural Family Support Center of Yeosu City implemented its educational project, “Happy Multicultural Life Shared with Islands” from August through this month, drawing great reaction from members of the multicultural families residing on islands.
The project has been implemented as it was selected in Jeollanam-do’s open call for projects for education support for multicultural families. It provided educational services for residents of islands, who didn’t have easy access to Multicultural Family Support Center.
In implementing the project, staff visited multicultural families who resided on Hoenggan-do in Nam-myeon, and Wolho-do and Gae-do in Hwajeong-myeon to conduct education on the role of parents, counseling on the development of children’s language, and education in understanding traditional Korean culture.
Also, the city offered Korean traditional cooking class that shared recipes for stew with rice cake and natural condiments, thus drawing great reaction from marriage-based female immigrants. Moreover, the city held Get to Know Our Town Tour of Odong-do and Jinnamgwan, the city’s major tourist sites and provided an opportunity to get a ride in the maritime cable car.
A city official said, “The project has served to dissolve the social and emotional isolation experienced by the multicultural families who live on islands, present specific directions for children’s education and the role of parents, and reinforce family solidarity.“
A marriage-based female immigrant who participated in the education said, “The education program which included counseling on children’s language development has been greatly helpful in rearing children,“ and added, “I just hope that the program will include more of traditional cooking class.“
