With the groundbreaking ceremony held in the afternoon on Feb. 29, the project for overhauling and then restoring Jinnamgwan in Yeosu, which is National Treasure No. 304, went into full swing.
Designed to herald the start of the work and wish for safety, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by three-hundred or so people including Yeosu Mayor Ju Cheol-hyeon, Governor Lee Nak-yon of Jeollanam-do, Administrator Rha Sun-hwa of Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA), members of National Assembly representing the city, and ordinary city residents.
The ceremony proceeded first with the pre-event entertainment performance by Yeosu City Traditional Music Orchestra, which was followed by congratulatory messages from key dignitaries in and out of the city and their ceremonial sod-turning and commemorative photo shoot.
Since 2004, the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) supervised the continuous monitoring of Jinnamgwan to ensure its safety, which concluded that it required maintenance and repair. For the project for overhauling and then restoring Jinnamgwan, its implementation design was sourced in July 2013.
In November 2014, the city had the implementation design approved by CHA, and following the signing of a contract with Geonyang Co., Ltd. in November, the city began the work on Dec. 9.
A total budget of 15 billion won is going to be invested in the project. Following archeological excavation and installation of scaffoldings, the overhauling and restoration of Jinnamgwan moves forward, aiming at its completion in 2019.
A city official said, “As Jinnamgwan is a national treasure-class cultural property that has great historical value and importance, the city is going to keep the process of its repairing open to city people and tourists through the project period,” and added, “The city will do its best to successfully restore the original form of Jinnamgwan to make sure that it boasts its splendor derived from its role performed three-hundred years ago as the center of save-the-nation drive and establishes itself as a major cultural property of Yeosu, a city of patriotic commitment of national defense.”
