Vibrating with the spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin whose posthumous epithet is Chungmugong, Yeosu Geobukseon Festival as the major event for the port city will take place for three days from May 6 through 8 at Yi Sun-sin Plaza in Jungang-dong and Jongpo Maritime Park.
Marking the 50th anniversary for the festival, Yeosu City (Mayor Ju Cheol-hyeon) and Yeosu Jinnam Geobukseon Festival Preservation Association (Director Lee Bok-eui) have decided to fix the name and date of the festival. Starting this year, they use the title of ‘Yeosu Geobukseon Festival’ and hold it for three days on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in May.
The theme for the 50th anniversary festival is ‘War Cry from Naval Forces of Three Provinces and Return of Natives in Their 50s’. With three-colored theme of national defense, folk, and ocean, the festival will focus on participation and experience as city residents and tourists get together at Yi Sun-sin Plaza (national defense) and Jongpo Maritime Park (folk).
As a leading program for Geobukseon Festival, Tongjeyeong Gilnori is Korea’s biggest street play where about 5,000 people participate in 40 teams. Highlighting the festival, the event reenacts Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s battles in the Imjin War, all the while presenting plenty of imitations such as Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Geobukseon, and artifacts from the Imjin War.
Plenty of experiential programs will be joined and enjoyed by the audience. They include Navy Ship Open Day, experiencing barracks of Jeolla jwasuyeong (‘Naval Command for Jeolla Left Province’), and sampling of canon firing. Notably, Tongjeyeong gilnori, Dragon Tug of War, and Sodong julnori (‘Children’s rope play’) will be established as all-time experiential events, thus allowing city residents and visitors to join in.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the festival, Photos and Videos Remembering 50 Years will be on display. The exhibition of photos, videos, and other art works in the possession of city residents during the festival will provide a venue for revisiting the history and memory of Yeosu Geobukseon Festival.
