Now Turning 50, Yeosu Geobukseon Festival to be Held from May 6 through 8

As the major festival for Yeosu City that carries alive the spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin whose posthumous epithet is Chungmugong, Yeosu Geobukseon Festival, which is based at Jinnamgwan, the command post for Jeolla Jwasuyeong (‘the left naval command‘), will proceed for three days from May 6 through 8 at Yi Sun-sin Plaza in Jungang-dong and Jongpo Maritime Park.
Describing its Golden Anniversary topics as ‘The War Cry of Naval Forces of Three Provinces and Return of natives in Their 50s;, the festival, which focuses on the three themes of national defense, folklore, and ocean, will be held as a participatory and experiential event at Yi Sun-sin Plaza (for national defense) and Jongpo Maritime Park (for folk).
As the first day of the festival, May 6, will begin with Goyuje (‘a ceremony for giving notice of the occasion to the shrine’) and dynamically present the history of the Imjin War and the heroic prowess of Admiral Yi Sun-sin through paying homage to the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, paying homage to Memorial Monument for Unnamed Fallen Sailors, Jeolla Jwasuyeong Dukje, Tongjeyeong Gilnori (‘music band’s on-street performance leading to the main venue’), etc.
As the main program for the festival, Tongjeyeong Gilnori is Korea’s biggest street play where about 5,000 people in 40 teams. Highlighting the festival that reenacts Admiral Yi-Sunsin’s battles during the Imjin War, the bountiful visual presentations will include various real stuffs or replicas for Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Geobukseon (‘turtle ship’), and artifacts from the Imjin War.
There will be plenty of experiential events engaging the spectators and promising their joyful appreciation. They include Navy Ship Open Day, experiencing the military post of Jeolla jwasuyeong, and firing of ancient cannon. Especially, Tongjeyeong gilnori, Dragon Tug of War, and Sodong Julnori (‘rope play’) are turning into standing experiential events through the festival, ensuring participation of city residents and tourists.
Also, marking the 50th anniversary, the festival will hold ‘Photo & Video Remembering 50 Years’. Exhibiting photos, videos, and other art works on the festival in the possession of city residents, the presentation will serve as an opportunity to recollect the history and memory of Yeosu Geobukseon Festival.
