A mural street has been created in Myodo-dong, Yeosu city to promote and commemorate the historical resources of Dodok Village where the allied naval forces of Joseon and Ming Dynasty were stationed at the time of the Japanese Invasion in 1592, which appeals much to the tourists and residents.
The Myodo area has the last known traces of Admiral Yi Sun-shin’s life. Especially, Dodok Village has historical significance in that Admiral Chen Lin of the Ming Dynasty stayed and won the battle by vanquishing several hundreds of enemy ships together with Admiral Yi Sun-shin.
In Myodo-dong, a history-theme mural project was pushed forward on the streets of Dodok Village in an attempt to promote such historical resources and provide a new popular tourist attraction that can be utilized as a source of tourism contents.
The mural street in Dodok Village reproduced army uniforms and weapons of the Joseon naval forces which varied based on the wearer’s rank as well as the scenes of sea battle against the Japanese forces at that time. This street is also utilized as an instructive field trip site. In addition, the realistic reproduction of archery and horseback riding scenes gains huge popularity among tourists.
Jeong Jae-ho, the Head of Myodo-dong office, said, “We came to push ahead with the mural project to develop the Myodo area that abounds with the spirit of patriotism and make it a more meaningful tourist attraction with lots to see.” He added, “To make our historically valuable Myodo-dong with scenic ocean views more prosperous, we will accelerate our efforts to develop new tourist attractions.”
