Focusing on Beach Safety Management
Yeosu city (Mayor, Ju Cheol-hyeon ) finished the preparation for opening 8 beaches including Manseongni Black Sand Beach, and will greet the vacationers from the 9th.
Yeosu city conducted ‘Joint Drills of Subsidiary Organizations for Prevention of Beach Safety Accidents in Yeosu’ on the 6th before opening the beaches in Ungcheon Beach with the participation of Yeosu maritime costal security center, Yeosu Fire Station, Eastern Branch in Jeonnam of Maritime Rescue & Salvage Association and citizens.
This joint drills were conducted as a preliminary training to establish the cooperation system among related organizations and to be more agile in times of emergency through ‘salvage exercise for drowning and missing persons’, ‘CPR treatment training’, etc.
Prior to this, Yeosu city has put efforts to create a pleasant environment of 8 beaches ready to open to the public. Among such efforts are water and soil pollution tests, inspection and maintenance of the facilities, management of public toilets, and cleaning near the beach areas.
Also, while all beaches stay open to the public, Yeosu city will pay its full attention to creating the pleasant and safe beach environment for 44 days from the 9th by having a lifeguard system in place, providing safety equipment, and installing jellyfish net, etc.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised over beach safety management issues since the Korean Coast Guard authority’s control over safety management system was taken over to the local governments as stipulated by the Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety enacted in 2014.
Regarding these concerns, a Yeosu city official said, “We will maximize our efforts to prevent any accident by mobilizing all administrative capacities so that the visitors to Yeosu city can enjoy swimming safely.” He also said, “Yeosu city will do its best to make sure that any safety-related accident does not occur this year.”
