Yeosu City and Volunteer Groups Sweat out to Help Gurye County Recover from Flood Damage

Yeosu City, related agencies, and volunteer groups are sweating out in Gurye County in their effort for emergency recovery from the flood damage inflicted in the county. According to Yeosu City, about sixty people including city officials, members of Yeosu Chapter of Korea Saemaeul Movement Center, and members of Yeosu Chapter of Korean Sport & Olympic Committee volunteered to clean up the wastes from the stores and wash the contaminated home appliances and furniture at the Gurye Fair that meets every 5 days on Aug. 11. Starting on the same day, Yeosu City will recruit volunteer groups and operate Volunteer Hope Bus every morning at 8 from Yeosu City Culture Center until the recovery from the flood damage is completed. A Yeosu City official said, “We extend our deepest consolation to those who have been severely affected by the unexpected heavy rain in the region,“ and added, “To ensure prompt recovery, we will muster the efforts of our related agencies and volunteer groups and provide all possible supports so that the residents in the affected region may quickly return to their normal life.“ Meanwhile, Gurye County suffered major damage including injured or killed people, 1,182 inundated houses, flooded farm land and livestock housing, and lost roads and bridges from a record 379.5㎜ rainfall that amounted to one third of a typical annual precipitation, which lasted between the 5th and the 9th of the month.
