Wills for Joint Cooperation for Realizing Carbon Neutrality and Fostering Hydrogen Industry
In December 21, 2021, Yeosu signed “Jeonnam-Yeosu Hydrogen Industry Fostering MOU” to lay the foundation for the future low carbon and eco-friendly hydrogen energy under the private-institute cooperation.
In the signing ceremony, total of 13 institutes and businesses participated and made resolutions for the joint efforts on fostering the hydrogen industry in Yeosu-Gwangyang Bay Area.
Jeollanam-do Yeosu City participated as the local government while Korea Industrial Complex Corporation and Green Energy Institute participated as the public institute. In addition, Korea South-East Power, Korea Western Power, and Korea East-West Power participated as the energy institute while GS Caltex, Lotte Chemical, Hanwha Global, Yeochun NCC, Air Liquid Korea, and Hanyang Corporation participated as the private business.
In the event, 6 figures representing the business field including Governor Kim Yeoungrok of Jeollanam-do, Mayor Kwon Obong of Yeosu City, CEO Lee Duhee of GS Caltex located in Yeosu Industrial Complex, CEO Hwang Jingu of Lotte Chemical and CEOs of 3 energy companies including Park Jinman of Korea Industrial Complex Corporation Jeonnam Branch, Director Ju Dongsik of Green Energy Institute, and Vice-President Jeong Gwangsung of Korea South-East Power participated.
In signing MOU, Jeollanam-do, Yeosu City, and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation will be providing the political and administrative supports while Green Energy Institute will be supporting the governmental and private hydrogen-related R&D projects at Yeosu Industrial Complex.

To reduce the greenhouse gas by 40% until 2030 and meet the rapidly increasing hydrogen demands, the participating businesses are planning to invest on commercialization of carbon dioxide collection and storage technologies for replacing the grey hydrogen as well as hydrogen fuel cell development projects and ammonia-based hydrogen production projects.
Mayor Kwon Obong of Yeosu City said “We hope that MOU will be the chance for developing Yeosu Industrial Complex into the energy hub in Northeast Asia. As Silicon Valley led IT innovation in 2000s, Hydrogen Valley focusing on hydrogen will be leading the world economy in 2050 carbon neutrality era. Yeosu City will be at the center of the carbon neutrality.”
To foster hydrogen industry, Yeosu City established “Basic Plans for Fostering Hydrogen Industry in Yeosu City” and planned the hydrogen industry fostering strategy based on the phased fostering roadmap differentiated from other regions. Yeosu City is heading toward the center of hydrogen economy.
