Yeosu City Starts Receiving "the Report of Victimization from Yeosu-Suncheon Incident" from Jan 21
27 community service centers to file the report, "Fact-finding Taskforce" is formed by the city
54 government officers responsible for report and receipt taking training for the guideline
Yeosu city starts "receiving the report of victimization from Yeosu-Suncheon Incident" on Jan 21.
The reporting period is for one year until January 20, 2023. "Report of Victim and Bereaved Family" to be officially recognized as the victim and bereaved family can be lodged at civil affairs offices of eup/myeon/dong community service centers and responsible offices for the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident of each city and county office.
In addition, the fact-finding of individual cases related to the Incident will be launched by receiving a "Fact-finding Report" from cities, towns, provinces, and diplomatic offices nationwide.
In relation to this, the city announced that "27 windows to file a report are prepared at eup/myeon/dong community service centers to promote smooth fact-finding and reports of the victim and bereaved family, and we put our best effort in the preparation such as designating responsible government officers and establishing the fact-finding taskforce."
The city has prepared the foundation for follow-up measures of the "Special Act on Yeosu-Suncheon Incident" by opening "the Office of Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Bereaved Family Association" and transforming "the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Taskforce" to "Yeosu-Suncheon Team."
Also, in January of this year, the city will form "Yeosu City Fact-finding team of Yeosu-Suncheon Incident" and promote professional investigations to reveal as many victims as possible within the short reporting period of one year and the fact-finding period of two years.
"The Fact-finding Team" is composed of 6 persons in total and their work will start on January 21, the first day of the reporting period after preparing the office on level 2 of Mangma Stadium.
The city will recruit one public officer as a general term of office to work as an expert on the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and with fact investigators (five non-regular workers), will support professional investigations and verification of the victimization.
In line with this, 27 eup/myeon/dong community service centers also opened "windows to report the victimization from the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident," designated 54 responsible public officers to "receive the report in person" for the survivors and the bereaved family members.
Last December, ▲ a lecture on "Looking back Yeosu-Suncheon Incident" by Jongil Park, assistant director of Yeosu Community Research Institute, and ▲ a special lecture on "Detailed Guidelines on Damage Report Work" by Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Committee Preparation Party of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety were carried out to secure the expertise of the responsible public officers at eup/myeon/dong community service centers.
An officer of the city said that "because the damage report starts after 74 years of the Incident, it is expected to have difficulty in identifying accurate range of the damage and truth investigation. For more accurate verification of the damage within the short period, it is desperate to have the active report by the survivors and the bereaved family members and to draw the attention of citizens." and asked for cooperation of local residents on the damage report.
In the meantime, Yeosu city promotes various supporting projects for the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident to commemorate the victims and to improve the healing and harmony of the bereaved families and social attention apart from the city's work receiving the reports this year.

Furthermore, the city plans to expand the nationwide attention a social consensus on Yeosu-Suncheon Incident through various supporting projects such as ▲the proposal of attracting a memorial park and designating the national holiday ▲hosting Yeosu-Suncheon Incident symposium ▲local experts training project and education project on learning correctly on Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and ▲historic site maintenance business.
