12% Inrease in Tourist in Yeosu City: "9,770,000" Visited Last Year
6.3%p Increase of Occupancy Rates in Accommodations: Boasting the Fame of Safe Tourism City with Citizens
The total number of tourists who visited the main tourist spots in Yeosu last year has been subtotalled to 9,773,695.
This number is a 12% increase of 8,720,000 visitors in 2020, the year before last, showing that tourists continuously visit Yeosu despite the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
However, it is 27% lower than 13,540,000 in 2019 before the COVID-19.
According to tourist trends, over 700,000 people continuously visited the city since April last year, and more than a million traveled to the city in August and October, the peak season. In particular, the number of visitors in September and November was almost close to that of 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tourists staying over the city are also increasing. According to the city, the occupancy rates of major accommodations was calculated as 52.4% with 6.3%p increase from 46.1% in 2020.
Yeosu city suggested the image of a safe tourism city developed by the citizens including the selection of "Jangdo Island" and "Hahwado Island" as the 25 Safe Trips in Summer and Autumn in 2021 (Korea Tourism Organization) and restoring travel confidence through the With Corona as the factors of increased tourists.
Above all, the city was able to effectively respond to the COVID-19 by the active participation of the citizens such as the emergency stop of movement enforced twice last year, and the consideration of Yeosu as a relatively safe place spread, possibly attracting more tourists.
An officer of the city mentions that "Once the domestic tourism becomes revitalized in 2022, contactless, nature-friendly tour programs are expected to attract more people" and that "starting with the Island tourism revitalization project connecting 'Yeosu Seom-Seom Gil (Yeosu Bridges from Islands to Islands),' Yeosu city promises to put the best effort in creating new contents and improving tourism convenience by ▲developing 'Wellness Tourist Spots' and ▲establishing 'global smart tourism city.'"
In the meantime, Yeosu city provided the Emergency Public Welfare Subsidy for the travel industry going through hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
Additionally, the city also works promptly for establishing a collaboration system with the tourism industry including Yeosu city office of Jeollanam-do Tourism Association, and for sustainable tourism development.
