Development of new tourism content in line with trends, creation of a smart tourism city
Operation of a 'Comprehensive Tourism Task Force'... Preventive measures against epidemics and prioritization of the citizens' safety
The City of Yeosu is spurring a leap forward as a ‘sustainable marine tourism resort city’ once again through the development of new tourism content and the creation of a smart tourism city.
According to the city, the number of tourists who visited Yeosu reduced by 35% from 13 million people in 2019 to 8.7 million people in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19. However, this figure jumped back by 12% last year with 9.77 million people visiting, and the number of tourists is expected to increase significantly this year with the recovery of the lifestyle before the pandemic and an increase in demand for domestic travel.
As such, the City of Yeosu plans to enhance its competitiveness with differentiated tourism content that utilizes the islands and seas, and continue its legacy as the best marine tourism city by creating the foundation for a smart tourism city.
The city will be starting with the designing of the 'development project of the Hwajeong-myeon Gaedo Island theme tourism resources' with an investment of 8.8 billion won. Based on the basic plan drafted last year, the city plans to develop Gaedo Island into an eccentric, themed tourist attraction linked to the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo.
Thereafter, Jeokgeumdo, Jobaldo, and Dunbyeongdo will be developed into tourism resources by theme, each with its own characteristics, by linking them with the Yeosu-Goheung bridge.
Including the revitalization of 'The Seom', a recharge rest area established at Haeoreum Hill, Chobal Island last December, island tourism content and convenience facilities that were somewhat lacking up until now are planned to be continuously expanded.
The creation of the 'global smart tourism city', in which 7 billion won is invested, will be completed in August this year. A smart integration platform will be established to provide individually customized tourism services, and the accumulated data will be utilized to develop sustainable tourism policies.
History tourism content will become further diversified as well. The construction of the 'Joseon-Ming Military Force Them History Park' will be completed this year following the 'Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion Dark Tourism' city tour that began last year.
A total of 10.8 billion won was invested in Dodok Village in Myodo-dong, which was the Joseon-Ming Military Force's camp during the Imjin War. The fund will be used toward constructing the Joseon-Ming alliance plaza, experience zone, memorial hall, decked walkways, children's play facilities, etc. It is anticipated to serve as a theme park not only for domestic tourists but also for Chinese tourists.
Meanwhile, the City of Yeosu began operating a 'Comprehensive Tourism Task Force' from the 19th with the full swing of the tour season.
The force consists of 15 teams including a civil complaint team, traffic team, food sanitation team, public toilet team, etc., and there will be a total of 11 departments with 20 civil workers and 60 fixed-term workers.
The management of tourist attractions against the epidemic and deployment of management staff will continue to be operated in response to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
A city official said: "Despite the drastically increasing number of COVID-19 cases, we expect many tourists to visit Yeosu in spring. We hope to continue to grow into a marine tourism resort city with novelty, where one can savor a safe and comfortable break by developing various tourism content and providing honest and friendly services.
