The representative festival of Yeosu city, the Yeosu Turtle Ship Festival returns triumphantly in 3 years.
Yeosu city and a Yeosu-Jinnam Society for the Preservation of Turtle Ship Festival, Corp. announced on the 15th the opening of 'the 56th Yeosu Turtle Ship Festival' on 29-31 July at the site of Yeosu Expo 2012.
Yeosu Turtle Ship Festival used to be held in early May every year, but it was not possible for the last 2 years due to the spread of COVID-19.
The city plans to offer various attractions and things to enjoy including the Tongjeyeong Parade, the highlight of the festival, a pilgrimage to historic sites of the Japanese invasion of Korea, an experience of signaling smoke, etc.
Also, festival programs are offered both online through a smartphone application and AR-VR experience and offline, increasing the participation of visitors.
The traditional ancestral rituals including Koyuje (ceremony of telling the gods) held on the commemoration day of the naval forces of Jeolla Jwasuyeong going into battle will be held on 3 May at Chungminsa Shrine, separately from the festival schedule.
Jongseop Lee, the chief organizer of the festival, said "the festival will keep pace with the changing environment by running online programs according to the changes in the festival paradigm."
He also revealed ambitions "the festival organizers will prepare the Yeosu Turtle Ship Festival which held in 3 years for the best so that the citizens can be cheered up after COVID-19 and boosted with pride in Yeosu, the city of loyalty."
Meanwhile, at the site of Yeosu Expo 2012, the 'Commemorative Event for Yeosu Expo 10th Anniversary' will be held for 10 days from 22 July before the Yeosu Turtle Ship Festival.
