Various events, such as ceremonies, exhibitions, academics, performances, experiences, etc. are prepared to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Expo
Yeosu City set up a briefing room for the Yeosu World Expo 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project at the Yeosu EXPO Ocean Park on June 1 and began a full-fledged promotion of the project.
The Yeosu World Expo 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project was planned to urge the government to use the exhibition venue in the future and to gather the power of citizens with the goal of successfully hosting the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and attracting COP33 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the successful hosting of the expo, while reviving the enthusiasm at the time of the expo.
The Citizen Promotion Committee for the Commemorative Project was formed in January to draw up the details of the event through various opinion-gathering processes until May.
The 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project will be run from the 22nd (Friday) to the 31st (Sunday) of July. Official events include a commemorative ceremony for the succession and practice of the spirit of the expo, an invitation of those who contributed toward promoting and hosting the expo, and a ceremony to pray for the development of the southern coast and south-central region and the attraction of COP33. A celebratory performance by famous singers was prepared for the commemorative ceremony to be held on the first day for the entertainment of citizens and tourists.
As a pre-event to hype up the actual event, the '10th Anniversary Photo & Poster Contest' based on the theme of 'The Living Sea & Coast', the slogan of the expo, and the 'Little Carbon Art Festival for Children' that exhibits pictures about the marine environment drawn by children with pure hearts have been promoted since June. Among the exhibited works, those that are chosen through screening are to be displayed at the expo.
The '2012 Yeosu World Expo Reminder Hall', which recalls memories of the expo at the time, and a promotion hall for promoting the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo are planned to be set up. Various performance events, including the 'Eco-Friendly Upcycling Work Exhibition' that exhibits the recycling works by famous local artists, 'Eco-Healing Performance' that makes use of recycled products, etc. are to be held as well. 'Maritime Safety Camp for Youth' is planned to be hosted at Yeusu Educational Institute of Maritime for Youth to prevent accidents that take place while playing in the water in the summer.
Various events in which citizens can participate themselves, including 'Sing Again Yeosu', a singing contest, 'Youth Dance Street' in which the youth can flaunt their hidden talents, 'Banquet of Eco Empathy', a launching ceremony for the protection of the marine environment, and 'Carbon Zero Eco Plogging' have been prepared. Participants are planned to be invited in June.
Shin Byeong- Eun, the chairman of the Promotion Committee for Citizens, said: “It is a good opportunity to reflect and examine the spirit of the Expo in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Expo. We are hoping that it will revive the city that has been subdued by COVID-19 and serve as a meaningful event that lays the foundation for the next 100 years of Yeosu."
A city official said: "We will be doing our best in preparing for the events to run a project that many citizens and tourists be satisfied with, and making every effort to prevent the diffusion of COVID-19 and safety accidents.”
