The city of Yeosu operates a comprehensive tourism task force... Working hard to alleviate the inconveniences experienced by citizens and tourists
The number of tourists visiting Yeosu this year increased by at least 20% compared to the previous year.
According to the city, the number of visitors to Yeosu's major tourist attractions as of the end of May this year was 4.07 million compared to 3.39 million last year, which indicates an increase of about 0.68 million (at least a 20% increase).
In particular, it was assumed that travel trends had significantly been restored since the lift of the social distancing in May, which more than doubled the number of group tourists compared to the previous month.
Big data statistics provided by the Korea Tourism Data Lab also indicated that the consumption expenditure of visitors to Yeosu increased by more than 15% compared to the previous year.
The city forecasted that such an increasing trend of visitors to last throughout June, 'the month of travel', and cautiously predicted that the trend will recover to pre-COVID levels in July to August, which is the season of tourism.
In response, the city is keeping itself busy in preparation of various attractions and entertainment that can satisfy its visitors.
First of all, festivals and events that had been held off up until now due to COVID-19 will be revived.
'Romantic Busking at Yeosu Night Sea' at the night sea of Yeosu has been held every Friday and Saturday at major tourist attractions since May.
In July, the 56th 'Geobukseon Festival' will be kick-started with splendor, followed by various exciting festivals including 'Fireworks at the Yeosu Night Sea', 'Grand Namdo Food Culture Feast', and 'Dongdongbuk Festival'.
From the 22nd to 31st of July, the commemorative event '2012 Yeosu World Expo 10th Anniversary' and additional events will be held at the Yeosu EXPO Ocean Park and around Yeosu.
Various incentives will be provided as well to attract tourists.
Various incentive projects are planned to be promoted, including: ▲ ‘Happy Travel Project' for the low-income class and the disabled ▲ ‘Namdo Accommodation Discount BIG Event’ to attract outside tourists and revitalize the tourism industry, and ▲ ‘Compensation Support to Attract Group Tourists’
A 'Comprehensive Tourism Task Force' will be operated until the end of October to resolve the inconvenience experienced by tourists and citizens.
The city employs more than 60 civil workers and fixed-time workers every Saturday and Sunday to resolve such inconveniences on-site by inspecting the traffic maps for major tourist destinations, tourist facilities, and convenience facilities.
In addition, the city plans to appoint 40 additional fixed-term workers in the maintenance of order, environmental maintenance, and quarantine management in tourist destinations in face of an increase in tourists.
A city official said: “With the lift of social distancing, the demand for travel is increasing exponentially. We will ready the city with various attractions and activities to enjoy so the City of Yeosu, the number one marine tourism city in Korea, can maintain its reputation. We will also do our best to minimize the inconvenience experienced by our citizens."
Meanwhile, according to the statistics on major tourist destination visitors, Yeosu was ranked number 5 among the top 10 most-visited tourist destinations by tourists in Jeollanam-do in 2021.
In particular, the EXPO Ocean Park was ranked number 3 among the most visited tourist destinations in the country.
