The new ferry 'Hamel' between Yeosu and Geomun...Two round trips a day, two hours
With the new service of the regular passenger ship "Hamel" between Yeosu and Geomun, the sea route of Geomundo Island has been opened.
According to the city, the regular passenger ship "Hamel" between Yeosu and Geomun was held at the Yeosu Expo Terminal on the afternoon of the 5th, attended by more than 150 people, including Mayor Chung Ki-myung, National Assemblyman Joo Chul-hyun, shipping company officials, and villagers.
The Hamel is a 590-ton, ultra-fast large passenger ship with 430 passengers and a maximum speed of 40 knots, and operates the Yeosu-Naro-Sonjuk-Chodo-Geomun route.
It is scheduled to operate two round trips in the morning and afternoon of the 1st, and the flight time between Yeosu and Geomun is about 2 hours and 10 minutes, which is expected to shorten the existing voyage time of more than 3 hours and greatly improve the settlement conditions of islanders.
Until now, Yeosu-Geomun Port has been inconvenienced by the arrival of the expiration of the existing regular passenger ship order, frequent cancellations due to the aging of the ship, and reduced accessibility to passenger ships due to one round trip per day.
In response, Yeosu City has been seeking various ways to stabilize the Yeosu-Geomun route, including a prehistoric competition, amendment of ordinances, and interviews with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Last year, local governments, not shipping companies or local seawater offices, came up with special measures of "securing reserve ships" due to 10-day long cancellations.
The new "Hamel," which will depart this time, is a passenger ship of KT Marine, which was selected through a public offering from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and will begin formal operations around the 20th after the final operation review by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and Yeosu City plans to provide KT Marine with ship depreciation costs and operating losses over the next 10 years.
At the launch ceremony, Yeosu Mayor Chung Ki-myung said, "Our city has the second largest island in Jeollanam-do, and especially ahead of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, securing maritime transportation rights for islanders is an important responsibility. We are very happy that the ferry, the biggest dream of the islanders, will be launched, and we will work harder to provide safer maritime transportation services."
