The commercialization of the CCU technology will lead to the realization of carbon neutrality in the Yeosu National Industrial Complex and the advancement of future industries
Yeosu City (Mayor Jung Ki Myung) has been selected at the open call for test bed sites for the “Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) Mega Project” organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The CCU Mega Project is aimed at achieving the 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and discovering new growth engines for the future. It is a large project that supports the technology cycle from supplying carbon dioxide to utilizing products.
Yeosu City signed a business agreement with Jeollanam-do and GS Caltex in August to prepare for this evaluation, receiving high scores in field evaluation and business plan for demonstration R&D implementation plan and commercialization plan implementation.
As a result, the city has carried out process demonstration to convert carbon dioxide in oil refining chemical processes into basic chemicals (olefins, naphtha, etc.), polyols etc. It is expected that the city will further strengthen the viability of industrial parks and carbon neutral response capability by providing the “low-carbon energy conversion technology” to the Yeosu National Industrial Complex, which emits 40 million tons of greenhouse gases annually.
Mayor Jung Ki Myung said, “We are making various efforts to secure greenhouse gas reduction technology for the Yeosu National Industrial Complex. We will actively create new industries for the future so that our city can predominate the carbon collection and utilization (CCU) market in the future.”
Meanwhile, among 27 places who have applied for the site selection competition for the CCU Mega Project, five test bed sites, including Yeosu City, have finally been selected. The selected test bed sites will involve the appropriation of KRW 900 billion for five years from 2026 after undergoing a preliminary feasibility study.
