Yeosu City Ramps Up Efforts to Host the 33rd UN Climate Change Conference

Active International Engagement Continues at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference
Yeosu City, led by Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong, participated in the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, to actively promote its bid to host the 33rd UN Climate Change Conference (COP33) in Korea’s southern coastal region and to publicize the Expo 2026 World Island Exhibition Yeosu Korea.
Deputy Mayor Choi Jeong-gi, with a six-member Yeosu delegation, attended the opening ceremony on November 11 (local time). The team visited pavilions representing more than 20 island nations, stressing Yeosu’s determination to host COP33 and advocating for the necessity of hosting the event. The delegation also worked to promote the island exhibition and encouraged international participation.
During a meeting with Yunus Arikan, Global Policy Director at ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), the Yeosu delegation detailed the city’s policies and efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality. They secured a commitment to collaborate on advancing Yeosu’s bid for COP33.
Deputy Mayor Choi Jeong-gi stated, “Governments from Greece, Malaysia, Japan, the Maldives, and Oceania have shown significant interest in our initiatives. We will channel the aspirations of our citizens to strengthen Yeosu’s bid for COP33 and ensure the success of the Expo 2026 World Island Exhibition Yeosu Korea, further elevating Yeosu’s global presence.”
