Yeosu City Embraces the K-Wave Boom, Launches a 1 Billion KRW Festival
Selected for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Large-Scale K-Wave Comprehensive Event Contest, Securing 500 Million KRW in National Funding for 'Beyond K Festa in Yeosu'
Yeosu City (Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung) announced on the 4th that it has been selected as a finalist for the 2025 Large-Scale K-Wave Comprehensive Event Local Government Collaboration Project, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. With this selection, the city has secured 500 million KRW in national funding. It will host a new K-Wave event with a total budget of 1 billion KRW.
This initiative aims to foster K-Wave events through collaboration between central and local governments. As part of the project, Yeosu, Busan, Gyeongju, and Cheonan will host special events in connection with a major K-Wave festival set to take place in Seoul this June.
Yeosu City's proposal, 'Beyond K Festa in Yeosu,'' revolves around the slogan "To Yeosu! To the World! To the Future!" and focuses on turning the city's unique tourism assets into dynamic K-Wave content.
Yeosu City plans to showcase its historical legacy as the main headquarters of Jeolla Jwasuyeong during the Joseon Dynasty, where it served for 400 years. The city will offer a one-of-a-kind experience, blending the 'Jeolla Jwasuyeong Naval Fleet Departure Ceremony' with traditional Korean music performances, creating an event that appeals to people worldwide. Interactive programs like the 'Yi Sun-sin Storytelling Naddal Walking Tour' will also be introduced.
In addition, Yeosu aims to attract international visitors by expanding its signature local cultural event, 'Romantic Busking,' which has been held since 2012. The city will feature events like the Digilog Festival, combining digital and analog elements, the 'K-Acoustic Concert,' and a stunning 'Drone Light Show.'
The Tourism Division Director of Yeosu City shared, "Through unique content that combines tradition with modernity, we will offer both domestic and international tourists a truly memorable experience. By carefully preparing this new mega event, we aim to position Yeosu as a cultural hub that aligns with the K-Wave trend and a world-class tourist destination."
