Yeosu Nangdo Selected as a Candidate for 'Best Tourism Village' by UN Tourism
- An island of treasures offering diverse tourist attractions, including dinosaur fossils, an outdoor art museum, hiking trails, and campgrounds
- Final results to be announced by the UN Tourism in November
Yeosu City (Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung) announced on the 18th that Yeosan Village in Nangdo, Hwajeong-myeon, has been chosen as South Korea's representative for the '5th Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism' award.
This competition, organized by UN Tourism in 2021, aims to promote sustainable regional tourism development and address the decline of the rural population.
Villages with fewer than 15,000 residents, based on agriculture, forestry, livestock, and fisheries, are eligible for the award. They are evaluated on the quality of their cultural and natural resources, economic and social sustainability, and public-private collaboration (governance), with model villages being selected.
Nangdo is famous for its dinosaur footprint fossil site, which was designated a natural monument in 2003. The coastline features stunning geological formations, including Jusangjeollidae and the Sinseondae, created by volcanic activity, making the island resemble a geological park.
The Nangdo circular trail, offering breathtaking coastal views, is a top trekking destination among national mountaineering clubs. The village also boasts various attractions, such as the 'Gangbeon Art Road,' where local artists have decorated the village walls with their works, the 'Nangdo Campground,' and 'Baeknyeongdo Milk Makgeolli.'
The residents of Nangdo actively engage in the tourism industry as ecological tourism guides, generating continuous income for the village. In 2021, the village was selected for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's 'Ecological Green Tourism Activation Program.' They are also working to preserve local traditions, such as reenacting the 'Bibi Gaksi Tal Nori.'
Yeosu Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung stated, "If Nangdo is ultimately selected as the Best Tourism Village by the UN Tourism, the beautiful natural environment and tourism excellence of Yeosu will be widely recognized, and it will become a global landmark." He added, "We will make every effort to ensure its selection."
Meanwhile, Yeosu's Nangdo was chosen as one of Jeollanam-do's "Islands You Want to Visit" in 2015, earning recognition for its potential as an ecological tourism resource. Since then, it has been consecutively selected as a "Must-Visit Island" by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2022 and as the "April Fishing Village Travel Destination" by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2024. It has recently gained more attention through the movie 'Killing Romance' and the variety show 'Moo No Plan.'
