The 'Yeosu Citizens' Task Force Opposing the Relocation of Yeosu MBC to Suncheon' (hereafter referred to as the Task Force) held its inauguration ceremony at 2 p.m. on the 27th at the Yeosu Citizens' Hall. In its declaration, the Task Force demanded, "Immediately halt and withdraw the unilateral relocation plan, which was pushed forward without gathering citizens' opinions."
According to the city, the inauguration ceremony was attended by over 1,000 people from diverse backgrounds, including Yeosu Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung, City Council Chair Baek In-sook, Director Park Jong-gil of the Yeosu Community Research Institute, as well as representatives from civic groups, the media, and the MBC Alumni Association.
The ceremony included a progress report and a reading of the declaration. It drew attention with a placard performance featuring slogans such as “Let’s protect Yeosu MBC with the power of citizens,” “We fiercely oppose the relocation of Yeosu MBC, which disregards the citizens of Yeosu,” and “A good friend when it stays! A bad friend when it leaves!” A city-wide signature campaign was also launched.
Park Jong-gil, Director of the Yeosu Community Research Institute, expressed his firm resolve, stating, "As a public broadcaster that should respect the opinions of residents, we cannot help but feel deep anger and disappointment at this arbitrary decision made without citizen involvement. We will mobilize every available means to keep Yeosu MBC in Yeosu, including a citizen signature campaign and legal action."
Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung of Yeosu City stated, "Today, we are launching this Task Force with the united will of our citizens to 'keep Yeosu MBC in our region and oppose the relocation to Suncheon.' A heavy burden becomes lighter when shared, and when we go together, even the impossible becomes possible." He then emphasized, "Yeosu MBC has the staunch support of 270,000 Yeosu citizens."
City Council Chair Baek In-sook also stated, "The Task Force launched today will serve as a firm central axis to restore the pride of the wounded citizens of Yeosu and unite their will. As the council that safeguards the identity and pride of Yeosu, we will stand with the citizens’ voices until the very end."
Meanwhile, the Task Force is co-chaired by Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung, City Council Chair Baek In-sook, and Director Park Jong-gil of the Yeosu Community Research Institute, and is composed of 18 members from various sectors. It was reported that labor sector organizations, including the Yeosu branch of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions and the Yeosu Industrial Complex Joint Development Council, have also recently expressed their intent to participate.
