- Total investment of KRW 19.5 billion to restore the original form and ensure structural stability, marking a new chapter as a patriotic historical and cultural space
Yeosu City (Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung) held a completion ceremony at 3 p.m. on the 21st at Jinnamgwan Hall, a National Treasure that symbolizes patriotic loyalty and is steeped in the legacy of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, to mark the end of its dismantling and restoration project.
The ceremony was held to celebrate the successful completion of the decade-long, large-scale restoration project with the citizens and to re-examine the historical value of Jinnamgwan Hall.
Built in 1599 as a guesthouse for the Jeolla Left Naval Command, Jinnamgwan Hall is the largest single-story wooden building in Korea and has undergone several repairs over its 400-year history. However, due to structural deterioration, a full-scale dismantling and restoration project began in December 2015.
A total of KRW 19.5 billion was invested in the project, which focused on resolving structural safety issues such as warping and ground erosion and restoring the building to its original form from before the Japanese colonial period. Notably, its historical value and grandeur have been restored by increasing the number of pillars from the existing 68 to the original 70 and replacing 54,000 roof tiles using traditional methods.
Since its reopening to the public on May 30, the hall has attracted numerous citizens and tourists. This completion ceremony is expected to be a starting point for Jinnamgwan Hall's new chapter as a 'patriotic historical and cultural space.'
The event began with a pre-ceremonial performance and included a progress report, commemorative and congratulatory speeches, awards for distinguished contributors, a celebratory performance, and a commemorative tree planting. The diverse cultural events set against the backdrop of the magnificently restored Jinnamgwan Hall deeply moved the attendees.
Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung of Yeosu City stated, "Using the completion of Jinnamgwan Hall's restoration as a stepping stone, we will proceed without delay with related projects, including the Jeolla Jwasuyeong Dongheon Historical and Cultural Park development and the restoration of the old fortress wall street." He added, "We will develop the Jinnamgwan Hall area into a premier historical and cultural hub."
